June is Men’s Health Month—let’s talk testosterone

Here at XY Wellness, our focus is on men’s health every day of the year. But since June is officially Men’s Health Month, we plan to devote the next several weeks to discussing some of the most urgent issues affecting modern men.

Today’s topic is one that we’ve spent some time talking about before. Back in February, we took a deep dive into the importance of testosterone in maintaining vitality and sexual health. But as we mentioned then, testosterone does a lot more than stoke your sex drive.

In fact, preserving healthy testosterone can help you to live a longer, healthier life, period.

Low T spells trouble for your heart

As part of a recently published study, researchers from Australia, North America, and Europe performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of nearly a dozen studies featuring nearly 25,000 subjects.

The goal was to see how testosterone levels impacted heart disease and mortality risk among aging men. And results revealed clear links between low levels of baseline testosterone and risk of death by any cause—as well as an association between very low levels of this sex hormone and higher risk of cardiovascular death.

This study appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine just last month. And it’s a reminder to all men to mind your hormone levels as you age.

Staying balanced naturally

The good news is that maintaining healthy testosterone levels is often as simple as maintaining healthy habits. And that begins with knowing a few factors to avoid.

Keeping cortisol in check with stress management and 7 to 8 hours of quality, restorative sleep each night is key—as is managing your weight with a clean, whole foods diet and regular exercise. But for additional support, supplements can help, too.

Ample vitamin D is essential for maintaining all aspects of your health, including your hormone levels. But minerals like selenium and zinc, and botanicals—such as Tongkat Ali, Fenugreek, and Cordyceps—also deliver scientifically supported benefits to your body’s testosterone production.

All of our elements of wellness work in tandem to keep your hormone levels at their healthiest and your body running like a well-oiled machine. So, stay tuned, because we’re just getting started.

Until next time,

The XY Wellness Team
