Natural Aging is Not a Disease

The Issue

As we age, our hormone levels change. This is a simple fact of life. It is not a disease. Nor should it be marketed as one. Yes, marketed. For decades now women have been bombarded with claims that hormone replacement therapy will lead to a healthier, happier, more energetic life. Men are now the targets of a similar pitch.

According to a 2010 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, only about 2 percent of men older than 40 need testosterone treatment. Nonetheless, with the pharmaceutical industry promoting this form of treatment, prescriptions have doubled since 2006. Sales of testosterone drugs are expected to triple over the next 5 years, making testosterone treatments a $5 billion industry.

And these drugs unfortunately bring with them a range of potential risks, including heart failure, liver problems, prostate problems, and overly aggressive behaviors.

The Takeaway

As always, be smart and be realistic. Understand that embracing natural aging does not mean you don't fight the good fight! It simply means that you accept that you earn your good health each day through the choices you make. So try not to look for a quick fix, particularly one that may create other, potentially more serious problems. Instead, please exhaust all lifestyle based approaches before considering alternatives.
